I’m about to graduate college and the number one money saving tip I have learned is GO TO THE GROCERY STORE. Seriously, I spend a quarter of what my friends do on food because they eat out every day. Plus I buy canned drinks to take with me to class instead of raiding a drink machine. I also eat better because while my friends are eating greasy pizza, I’m eating rice and beans with corn and drinking seltzer water. Not only only am I healthy but IYAMCHEAP

My family often neglects vegetables. I moved the vegetables from a fridge drawer to a shelf. I also wash and prepare veggies as soon as I buy them, such as by removing the leaves of radishes, washing them and storing them in a bowl. For lettuce, I cut off 1-2 cm of the bottom of the stalk, and store it in a plastic container with water in the bottom, like a vase of flowers. Veggies last longer and get eaten more often! I live on my own. When I buy meat, I’ll get a large slab of it. I bring it home, cut it up into one-person portions, wrap it in cellophane, and freeze them. If I need meat for a meal, I’ll defrost just one portion. I only need to buy meat every month or so. IYAMCHEAP.

I don’t put sweetener in my coffee or tea, but every time I’m at the coffee shop I pick up a sugar packet or two and a napkin. It’s not much, but it adds up very quickly and is exactly the same to the coffee shop as if I put it in my drink. IYAMCHEAP.

My family is notorious for using a lot of tomato sauce for pasta and parmesans, etc. After pouring the sauce out of the container, there’s always some left behind. In order not to waste it, we put some water inside the jar, put the lid on tightly and shake it until there is nothing left on the sides. When we pour it out into the sauce we have warming up, we get a little extra. An added bonus is that we don’t have to rinse out the jar before recycling it. IYAMCHEAP/WE ARE CHEAP

I got myself a crockpot. Getting meals ready with a hectic college schedule is impossible sometimes. Now I throw some inexpensive and healthy (veggies, beans, little to no meat) soup/chili recipe in the crockpot while I do homework and clean the house. The crockpot is huge, so it makes enough for me and my boyfriend to have dinner, and leftovers all the next day. Far better than fast food! IYAMCHEAP

As a high schooler, I have a lot of friends whose birthdays are during the school year. I learned this this trick from my mom. For their respective birthdays, I bake them a cake or cupcakes and make them a card. They love it! What they don’t know is that really IYAMCHEAP.

Whenever I order something online (usually food), I always do a quick search for coupons. Especially with pizza places I can always find a code that gives 10-20% off an online order. I don’t think I’ve paid full price for pizza in over a year. IYAMCHEAP!
