I am a college student and I regularly need textbooks costing $400-500. I learnt pretty quickly that the publisher often offers cheaper prices if you order online. I also learnt that e-books can be $40-50 cheaper per book. This last semester my books have all been used books, one edition back. I got a hold of another student’s books and they are literally word for word with just a few pictures, colours and the covers changed. I also apply for every scholarship and bursary. Saved hundreds!

Rather than buying new — or even used — textbooks, I’ll sometimes just rent my college textbooks if it is available. The rental lasts throughout my whole semester, so I don’t have to worry about constantly renewing the book like I have to with library books. I spent under $150 and got 2 rentals and a used. I’m a college student buying food for myself for the first time. There is some I haven’t opened yet and don’t predict I’ll use by the time the semester ends. I know some of the big stores have easy return policies even without a receipt so I’ve gone in there a few times with unopened food and just gotten store credit! I buy things I know I’ll eat instead and it means I’m not spending any more money. IYAMCHEAP.

I am a university student studying literature at one of the biggest institutions in my country. It has a great library system. So, I never buy textbooks; I find the one I need in the library. My friends spend up to $500 on supplies at the beginning of the year; I rarely even step into the campus bookstore. Professors always claim that we MUST buy the editions they condone, but I’ve never gotten a grade below a B- in their classes. Booyah, IYAMCHEAP and smart!

As a broke college student, I decided to use coupons. I learn that you can stack one manufacturer coupon with Target coupon for one product. So far, I got free floss, free dish sponge, free Welch Fizz, free ibuprofen, free Panteene shampoo&conditioner, and just today, I redeemed free Herbal Essence shampoo and conditioner. Plus you get $.05 Target coupon for every reusable bag you bring. IYAMCHEAP

I’m a college student and I’m always on the lookout for free food! Lately, I have been attending any and all guest lectures and club meetings that offer free refreshments. This way, not only do I get to learn about cool things and meet interesting people, but I also get to satisfy my hunger with mostly homemade goodies rather than the awful food offered on campus! I’ve always wanted to get certified to perform CPR, but even if I could get financial aid for the lessons, the cost of gas to go to them would add up. I found out after completing Health I that Health II at my school offered CPR training, so I made sure to sign up for it for my senior year. Free lessons. In addition, Health II was only a half credit, so I chose Media Aid to fill the gap. Since it’s volunteer work, I’ll get the service hours I need at school. More gas money saved. IYAMCHEAP

I just started college and live in the dorms. Its laundry rooms are always full, half of the machines are broken, and sometimes the machines seem to work but stop halfway through. The laundry room has a “use at your own risk” policy, so it was a huge waste of money. So finally I just started washing my clothes by hand and hanging them by the windows to dry. IYAMCHEAP.
